Free retraction & DOI checker

Paste your reference list. We pull out every DOI, resolve it against CrossRef and check it for retractions, corrections and expressions of concern (including Retraction Watch data).

Up to 15 DOIs per check · 0/8,000 characters

The free check only looks at DOIs. It doesn't check whether a reference supports your claim, or whether the title, authors and year match the DOI — the full Verify Citations report does.

How the free check works

  1. We extract the DOIs

A plain pattern match pulls every DOI out of your text, including doi.org links. No AI model reads your references.

  2. We resolve each one in CrossRef

If a DOI doesn't resolve, it's either mistyped or doesn't exist, and a reviewer will notice either way.

  3. We check for update notices

CrossRef records retractions, corrections and expressions of concern against the original DOI, including Retraction Watch data.

What the full Verify Citations check adds

Most reference lists include papers without a DOI, and a DOI that resolves can still point to the wrong paper. The full check resolves every reference by title and author across CrossRef, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex, and flags mismatched years, authors and titles as well as fabricated sources. Your first run is free when you sign up.
